When to Trim Hedges and Trees: Respecting Bird Nesting Season in the UK
Trimming hedges and trees is an essential part of keeping your garden safe, tidy, and looking its best—but did you know that when you trim matters just as much as how?
At Giles’ Eco Gardening Worcester, we take a wildlife-friendly approach to every job we do. One of the most important things we consider during hedge and tree maintenance is the UK’s bird nesting season—and here’s why it matters.
🗓 When Is Bird Nesting Season?
In the UK, bird nesting season typically runs from March to August. During this time, many garden birds are busy building nests, laying eggs, and raising chicks—often tucked away deep in your hedges or trees.
It’s not just best practice to avoid disturbing them—it’s protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Intentionally damaging or destroying an active nest could result in serious consequences.
✂️ So When Can You Trim?
✅ Ideal Time for Hedge and Tree Work:
September to February is the safest window for routine hedge cutting and tree shaping.
This avoids peak nesting season and allows birds to complete their life cycle undisturbed.
⚠️ What If My Hedge Needs Urgent Work?
There are exceptions. If a hedge or tree poses a safety risk or is obstructing access, urgent trimming may be necessary. In these cases:
Always check for active nests first—look deep inside hedges, not just at surface level.
If in doubt, call in a professional (like us!) to assess before doing any cutting.
